Lighthouse’s advocacy work responds to the fluctuating needs of the immigrants and refugee community.

Lighthouse’s advocacy work responds to the fluctuating needs of the immigrants and refugee community. For this reason, we will continue to pursue advocacy projects as needs arise, whether it is related to local law enforcement agencies, state or federal legislation, or support for other like-minded advocacy campaigns.

Check out some projects and campaigns we’ve worked on in the past:

The Families Belong Together March took place on June 30, 2018, in Centennial Park and featured speeches by representatives of LIA, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, and Hope College that challenged detention policies. The march’s platform was used to encourage political engagement as a means of making change.

Letter Campaign to Michigan State Police

LIA’s letter campaign in July 2018 called upon the Michigan State Police to cease involving federal immigration agents in its routine operations, cease spending its time and resources enforcing federal immigration laws on behalf of other agencies, and rededicate itself to its primary mission of protecting Michigan’s residents on the road and in their communities.

Reproductive Rights Letter Writing Campaign

In the weeks following the June 24th Supreme Court Ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, LIA launched a letter-writing campaign demanding Michigan representatives to protect reproductive rights. Over 75 letters and postcards were mailed out encouraging local government officials to stand up for reproductive rights.

Welcoming New Afghan Neighbors

The Welcome Challenge of 2021 encouraged West Michigan to perform welcoming actions in their communities, bringing small acts of kindness and awareness to individuals throughout the region as we welcomed our new Afghan neighbors.
