Important Update: New Citizenship Civics Test Updates
On September 17, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a major change to the civics test required for new citizens. As of October 20, 2025, a new, more rigorous version of the test will affect everyone who applies for citizenship using Form N-400 on or after that date.
Why Does This Matter?
Becoming a U.S. citizen is no easy journey. It demands years of residency, good moral character, and demonstrating English proficiency. Now, with the new, more challenging civics test, applicants must also be ready to answer more and tougher questions.
For thousands in our community, this means studying U.S. history and government while also working hard to master new vocabulary and concepts in another language. These changes could make an already difficult process even harder, and are a reminder of the dedication and resilience required of our immigrant neighbors.
What’s Changing?
Current Civics Test (applications filed before Oct. 20, 2025):
Applicants answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly (questions selected from a bank of 100).
New 2025 Civics Test (applications filed on or after Oct. 20, 2025):
Applicants must answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly (questions drawn from a bank of 128).
Applicants age 65+ who have been legal permanent residents 20+ years:
May still take a simplified test (6 out of 10 correct, from a pool of 20 questions).
What Should Applicants Do?
Anyone who hopes to take the current, shorter test should file their citizenship application before October 20, 2025.
You can apply up to 90 days before you’ve completed your required residency (5 years, or 3 years if continuously married to a U.S. citizen).
